Cakes Inspired by Kitchen Stuff

I love making food-related cakes, like the hamburger cake.  Here's some more cakes fun cakes inspired by items in the kitchen.

"Rice is ready" as my mom said when I presented her with this cake.  I made this for her birthday the other week - Happy 47th Birthday (again) Mom!  It was banana sour cream cake with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.  Everything is edible and items are made out of sugarpaste.
Here is a view from the top.  For some cakes, I really like to spend extra time on the cake boards.  I think it can really dress up the cake presentation.
A two-tier cake I made for a party for some staff members at Calphalon Culinary Center in Toronto.  This one was very fun to make!
Hope you enjoyed this weeks post!  Have a wonderful week and long weekend!

2nd Birthday: Yellow Tractor Cake

This past weekend was my nephew Maseo's 2nd birthday.  Last year I made him a fun Heffalump Cake and this year it was a tractor cake.  He actually calls dump trucks, excavator and any yellow truck a tractor.
Everything is completely edible on the cake.  It was lemon butter cake with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.
He loved the cake and really wanted to play with the tractor.  I think it was confusing for him whether it was a toy or a cake.  We let him remove the sugarpaste wheels before we cut it up...  he then pointed at it and said "Broken".

A 5-tier Baby Shower Cake in Pink!

This baby shower cake first came in mint green, then in blue and now in PINK!   My client gave me a lovely inscription to add to the cake "Happiness is when two becomes three"
Here is a close up of the sugarpaste shoes - they were adorable!
Here is a view from the top.  The flavors for this 5-tier cake were Strawberry Vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream, Chocolate Sour Cream cake with chocolate buttercream and the top tier was Banana Sour Cream cake with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.
A view from the back of the cake.  I just love making the clothelines.

6th Birthday Cake: A girl who loves dogs

I receive a lot of requests to create sugarpaste characters of pets.  Whether it is peeking out of a wedding cupcake tower, part of a wedding cake topper or cupcake topper.  And since these are made out of sugar - you can save them for quite a long time as a keepsake.

Here's a 6th birthday cake for a girl who loves dogs.  All the characters are handmade out of sugarpaste.
The doghouse and cake are chocolate velvet cake with chocolate buttercream.
Unrelated to the event above... but I thought it was cute to share...
And here is a set of dogs that I made for a wedding cupcake tower.  Actually its their tails - which I think are so cute.  Have a great week!

50th Birthday Party: Saxophone Cake

What a super fun, but very hard cake I made this past weekend.  It was for a surprise 50th birthday party for a Saxophone player.  His wife contacted me over 7 months ago to book this cake.  We secretly traded emails over her son's email account to make sure her husband wouldn't find out.  She also developed photos and mailed them to me - I love mail!

The cake was to feed 60 people, but I think it fed way more than that.  It was heavy!  Strawberry vanilla cake with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream and handmade sugarpaste decorations.
Here are some pictures on how the cake came together.  First was the template - it was 80% of the real dimensions of the real saxophone.
Then the first layer of strawberry vanilla cake and spreading on the vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.
The final layer of cake after I carved the saxophone.
